Hiee! Wei Yong is hereeee... for the first time.. to post something..

I'm enjoying the holidays quite a bit. Besides the part where I have to do the mind-blanking college application essays, and be an illegal chauffeur for my two younger sisters who have tuitions at least once a day, everyday - until I get my P license under the name of 'practice' apparently, as put by my elder sisters. I hope you're having an interesting time.

My exams is going to end Wednesday but I think it's better to update this blog now!

For your information, firefox 3 is available now! (Well almost actually, it should be ready when you guys read this post) So go download it!This is Hyde Park and how it's like at weather nowadays, it's sunny and windy. Weather around 15C. Pretty cool to play sports and stuff.

Hey, I am Samantha here, one of your J4 seniors!

Looking at your other seniors wishing you good luck, I feel that it is good to wishing some more luck for you!! Lol..

Well, I hope that you would truly enjoy yourselves during these two years though it is gonna be tough. Don't worry! Many of your seniors have gone through the same things. Since they have gone through the tough period of time, by the grace of God, you can too!

I always say this to juniors, remember that you are not alone. God brings you here because He has a purpose in you. Be a supporter and encourager for one another ok? Life is not tough when you have friends supporting you. Your dear seniors are always there for you. If you don't know anything, you can always ask them ya.

If you want, your hostel lifes can be as vibrant as possible! If you wanna have bbq, you can have. If you wanna have a party, you are most welcome! Haha... you can always hear many interesting stories about seniors' hostel lifes from your J2's!

So all the best to the j2s now whom i've had the pleasure of sharing a roof for one year. You guys are amazing. You're a tough bunch taking J1 in a stride with always a smile to share. Jia You as the year heats up! Woo hoo! The fun is only beginning ;)

And all the best to the J1s this year..lovely lovely picture down there...so many guys!! ahem ahem...haha..you should hear all our stories. Why women cry?

Why are you crying, a young boy asked his Mom?
"Because I'm a woman," she told him.
"I don't understand," he said.
His Mom just hugged him and said,"And you never will, but that's O.K...."

Later the little boy asked his father,"Why does Mom seem to cry for no reason?".
"All women cry for no reason," was all his Dad could say...

The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry. Finally he put in a call to God and when God got back to him, He asked, "God, why do women cry so easily?"

GOD answered..."When I made woman, I decided she had to be special.

I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet, made her arms gentle enough to give comfort...

I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going and take care of her family and friends, even when everyone else gives up, through sickness and fatigue without complaining...

I gave her the inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times will come even from her own children.

I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances. Even when her child has hurt her badly....

She has the very special power to make a child's boo-boo feel better and to quell a teenager's anxieties and fears....

I gave her strength to care for her husband, despite faults, and I fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart....

I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly....

For all of this hard work, I also gave her a tear to shed. It is hers to use whenever needed. It is her only weakness.... When you see her cry,tell her how much you love her, and all she does for everyone, and even though she may still cry, you will have made her heart feel good."

Thief was so jealous, he starts screaming,

He called and talked for about 2 minutes,

Here's just an update bout our latest batch of AC Msian Scholars!
There are 9 of them, out of a total of 72 J1 Scholars. We have 2 Directs and the rest flow-thrus.
Here's a pic we took the other day - spanning 3 generations! But its an incomplete one.. Meaning not everyone was there lah.
Nonetheless! We were participating in my favourite activity! One that involves food! =)

On the left are the 'older' ppls. In the middle is the retarded one. For the right row, its Yi Shen, Arthur, Timothy, Yong Jun, Calvin and Shan Qi (Back to front) Woah see I know their names! Muahaha. Helps that most are English names! =)

This is just to encourage you all lar. You may feel stressed now, or you may feel normal already after these two years (for J2's), or you may going to feel more pressure (for J1's). But I just want you to know that even though you feel it is hard now, you are not in the stage where there's no hope. If you need help, sometimes your help is just beside you. I believe if you need a listening ear, you can find one. God is always there for us. Share with you a story.

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonged to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happens at the lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times of my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.

The Lord replied, "My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

I feel touched when I read this, haha.. So I thought maybe this will give you some encouragement also. So yeah, hope this helps! :)

An elderly woman walked into the Bank of Canada one morning with a purse full of money. She wanted to open a savings account and insisted on talking to the president of the Bank because, she said, she had a lot of money. After many lengthy discussions (after all, the client is always right) an employee took the elderly woman to the president's office.

The president of the Bank asked her how much she wanted to deposit. She placed her purse on his desk and replied, "$165,000". The president was curious and asked her how she had been able to save so much money. The elderly woman replied that she made bets. The president was surprised and asked, "What kind of bets?" The elderly woman replied, "Well, I bet you $25,000 that your testicles are square." The president started to laugh and told the woman that it was impossible to win a bet like that. The woman never batted an eye. She just looked at the president and said, "Would you like to take my bet?" "Certainly", replied the president. "I bet you $25,000 that my testicles are not square." "Done", the elderly woman answered. "But given the amount of money involved, if you don't mind I would like to come back at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning with my lawyer as a witness." "No problem", said the president of the Bank confidently.

That night, the president became very nervous about the bet and spent a long time in front of the mirror examining his testicles , turning them this way and that, checking them over again and again until he was positive that no one could consider his testicles as square and reassuring himself that there was no way he could lose the bet.

The next morning at exactly 10 o'clock the elderly woman arrived at the president's office with her lawyer and acknowledged the $25,000 bet made the day before that the president's testicles were square. The president confirmed that the bet was the same as the one made the day before.

Then the elderly woman asked him to drop his pants etc. so that she and her lawyer could see clearly. The president was happy to oblige. The elderly woman came closer so she could see better and asked the president if she could touch them. "Of course", said the president. "Given the amount of money involved, you should be 100% sure." The elderly woman did so with a little smile.

Suddenly the president noticed that the lawyer was banging his head against the wall. He asked the elderly woman why he was doing that! and she replied, "Oh, it's probably because I bet him $100,000 that around 10 o'clock in the morning I would be holding the balls of the President of the Bank of Canada!"

This post is directed to our dear jrs. As you guys prepare for your chinese/OP, do remember your poor old seniors facing one the the biggest hurdles in their entire life. As such, if you do come across anyone looking stressed, nervous or looking as if they had the sunlight sucked out of them, do cheer them up, offer them some food or some words of encouragement. Or better still, just be the idiotic wackos that you are. I think that works best at allowing people to de-stress. =)

Also, I'm posting up the timetable of our papers.. Just in case you would like to be wishing us luck/praying for us. Yays. Do correct me if I got any dates/info wrong. (This goes out esp to Bio/Lits/H3 ppls whose subject codes I'm not sure of). This is I guess also to update the J3's on how we're doing. =)

And of course, if you guys need help for OP, just ask nicely for us to bombard you with possible questions. We'd love to do so. =)

Morning Devotion - Why the World Needs A Superhero

I was watching the movie Superman last year, and one of the scenes caught my attention. It was one where Lois Lane was writing an article entitled: Why the world needs Superman. And it really got me thinking – Why is it that we need superheroes?

Well, I gave it some thought, and this is what I’ve come up with.

In today's troubled world, perhaps many of us would want someone we can look up to, someone we respect, someone with great ability, and in a sense someone ‘super’. The list of superheroes is virtually endless: Superman, Spiderman, Captain Planet, perhaps? Or even the Powerpuff Girls.

Perhaps it is the human nature in us, that when faced with the stresses and problems of life, we would wish we had the power to make things easier for us. After all, who wouldn’t want to possess the power of flight, so that we can come to school in style, avoiding the morning rush-hour traffic in the process? Or with super-speed to complete all our tutorials, or even finish the marking of exam scripts in minutes?

All these, would then demonstrate the insecurities of Man. We are afraid of what we cannot do. After all, we are human. We have our limits. And more often than not, we are stretched to those limits. It is also during these times of need that we would cry out to God. The times where we cannot accomplish things on our own – where we would seek help from a greater power. In trying times that I’ve been through, there was no Superman, no Batman, no Spiderman who came to my rescue. It was always the hand of God that has lifted me up.

This actually made me wonder, if superheroes were actually modelled after someone real? If it is, then I would think that there is no other man but Jesus. He is the very person who died to save us. He brings us comfort in the night, he gives us assurance through the storm. I rejoice in Him, for He has brought me life. I give thanks to Him, for he is my provider, my ultimate superhero.

And of course, God has placed many human heroes around us. People who are able to complete seemingly impossible tasks or overcome insurmountable odds. These are friends, teachers, seniors – anyone – whom we look up to, they are people who inspire and influence us.

So if there is anyone who has in fact impacted you, I would encourage you to walk up to that person, and let him, or her know that he’s your hero. I am sure, that even heroes will need words of encouragement!

With that being said, what about the rest of us? Have we thought about being heroes ourselves? Certainly, we do not need to possess any superpowers to be able to inspire others, nor would we need any special skills to be able to touch lives. All we need, is to have a sincere heart.

The bible tells us that The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. Colossians 3:23-24 also reads: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

So, would we then, heed His call to be Salt and Light of the World – to let our light shine before men? All we need to do, is to give of ourselves, and to open up our hearts. And in doing so, we will become heroes in our very own right.

Hello people! To relax splintered nerves, and probably prepare you for a Phd in Philosophy if you do come up with something better. Enjoy.

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid term.

The answer, by one student, was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well:

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you," and taking into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct......leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why,last night,
Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

Hellos ppls. I've come up with a list to see how's everyone's response bout the bus.. We might be able to use the Welfare Fund if there's enough demand.. Ooh econs! Haha..

For a 30 seater its $60 for one way and $80 for two way. 45 seater is $70 and $100 respectively.

That would be :

If we take public transport..
5 mins waiting for 196, time to travel to Buona Vista MRT= 10min, BV MRT to Pasir Ris MRT=43 mins + waiting time ave 5 min. Pasir Ris wait for bus, 5mins. Time taken to reach MJC = 10min. Plus all those walking time, 5 mins.
Total : About 80+ mins (1hr 20 mins)
Cost : $0.45 + $0.50 + $0.45 - $0.20 (Rebate for transfer) = $1.20

So yup. Bus will probably be bout 45mins? Max one hour. (Hopefully) And don't need to walk to bus stops/Run for bus/Squeeze on MRT! Just add a bit more money only loh.. And we'll be able to eat meals in hostel so that's another way of saving money! So let's see how it goes yeah..

Do let me know by Sunday aft so that hopefully we can arrange by monday (one week's notice for the bus ppls loh)..

Indulge your inner child today

TODAY is 'Why? Day'. Never heard of it?

Never mind, you have xx hours left - depending on when you read this article and the main one by Dr Frank Starmer on this page - to go with the flow of your suppressed curiosity.

Let the child in you ask 'Why?' 'Why not?' 'How come?' 'What if?' 'But, but...' And let the child or kids in the family have their day, ergo, no question, no matter how wacky it seems to you, is to be dismissed out of hand today.

I like to believe that, like Dr Starmer, I have always been curious, and that I have had some role in my children's curiosity.

Eons ago, when I was a six-year-old, my dad finally got me a mechanical wristwatch (those were pre-digital days). Of course he conveniently failed to say where he bought it. But it impressed me: shockproof, waterproof, 17 jewels, automatic, it proudly declared on its faceplate.

Yes, I was curious - to see if it could be shocked. The good old very scientific drop test was initiated. Let's just say that after my experiment I still had a very accurate timepiece: it was very, very accurate twice a day.

Many, many years later, my own six-year-old daughter proved she had acquired my 'curiosity' genes.

We lived on the fifth storey of a five-storey walkup apartment block then, with a balcony where she would spend her weekend playtime. I bought her a battery-operated flying saucer toy, flashing lights and all.

Yes, she tested it. She reported very scientifically that it did not fly when, ahem, the drop test from the balcony was initiated. The good news for me is that she is still curious, and is a doctor training to be a scientist-clinician.

My other daughter is just as curious, in a more philosophical way. Once, we were on a holiday when she was three. At breakfast in San Francisco, we were served bao (Chinese buns). But the bao had a hole on top, presumably to let steam out.

She took a look at the bao in front of her and bawled, 'Who bit my bao?'

It was quite a scene as she was inconsolable. Someone chipped in: 'Look, everyone's bao has a hole in it.'

I would like to think it was her philosophical curiosity (from the particular to the general reasoning at work) that made her riposte: 'Who bit everybody's bao!'

She should be all right on her curiosity quotient (CQ). She has started university, reading philosophy, of course.

So, take the family out the rest of today, and together ask 'Why?' and so on. Look at road signs. Ponder over why a particular sign says 'Raised zebra crossing', yet has a drawing of a man crossing a street.

Recall those good old days when you studied, loved or hated science - and whether you crammed in useless formulae or learnt useful stuff like 'Which organ expands up to 10 times when excited?'

By the way, it's not what you think, you dirty-minded you. It's the pupil of the eye.

Now would you believe it. It wasn't just a Gold. Its was a Gold With Honours!
It really is a blessing and even as an ensemble, we find it hard to believe.
Nonetheless, our Big Boss up there has seen our efforts and awarded this to us. And we shall graciously accept! =)

And I would especially like to thank all of you guys.. For your well-wishes and support! Even a simple 'good luck' made a HUMONGOUS difference for SYF day. And all of you even reached deep into your pockets and dug out that $8 to watch our recital! It really REALLY means a lot to me! =)

Why men Lie!!!

One day, while a woodcutter was cutting a branch of a tree above a river, his axe fell into the river.
When he cried out, God appeared and asked," Why are you crying?"
The woodcutter replied that his axe has fallen into water.
Then God went down into the water and reappeared with a golden axe.
"Is this your axe?" God asked.
The woodcutter replied, "No."

God again went down and came up with a silver axe. "Is this your axe?" he asked.
Again, the woodcutter replied, "No."
God went down again and came up with an iron axe. "Is this your axe?" God asked.
The woodcutter replied," Yes."
God was pleased with the man's honesty and gave him all three axes to keep, and the woodcutter went home happily.

One day while he was walking with his wife along the riverbank, the woodcutter's wife fell into the river.
When he cried out, God again appeared and asked him, "Why are you crying?"
"Oh God , my wife has fallen into the water!"
God went down into the water and came up with Jennifer Lopez. "Is this your wife?" he asked.
"Yes," cried the woodcutter.
God was furious. "You cheat! That is an untruth!"
The woodcutter replied, "Oh, forgive me God . It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I said 'no' to Jennifer Lopez, You will come up with Catherine Zeta-Jones. Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You come with us also."
The second man, in a pitiful voice then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!"
"Bring them all, as well," the lawyer answered.
They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.
Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you."
The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place; the grass is almost 1 metre high!"

Lesson : Don't trust kind lawyers :-)

Posting/Retrieving stuffs from the shared folders..

Hey there peoples.. we have been accessing each other's folders via the hostel network thingy.. so like yeah.. follow these simple steps to get stuffs! mainly photos lah.. :)

Uploading Files to My Network Places

1. Copy/Move the file you want to share to a shareable folder. (The one which i use is 'Shared documents' under My Computer)
2. Right click the folder you would want to share and click 'Properties'.
3. Click on the 'Sharing' tab and under 'Network sharing and security', make sure the 'Share this folder on the network' box is ticked.
4. When you go back to the folder, it should show some kind of hand holding it. This means that the folder is now shared. Hurrah!

For convenience's sake, our computers are under a workgroup.. to set it to the workgroup:
1. On your Desktop, right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
2. Click on the 'Computer Name' tab.
3. There will be a section where it says 'To rename this computer or join a workgroup, click change'. Well, click change! =)
4. Change the name of your computer to your liking but set the workgroup name to 'VISTA'.
5. Click Ok till everything looks right..
6. Tell Wei Kit if it works! =)

Retrieving Files from My Network Places

1. Click Start.
2. Click My Network Places
3. Click View Workgroup computers from the sidebar.
4. Look for our stuffs! I'll normally have photos from my comp, msianidle..

Hey, it is a great article, though I feel a bit weird while reading through it..

Just to voice what I feel..

I feel that the author is being childish in making the value of the knowledge of world issues little..

When I read the article, I felt something wrong.. then I read the teacher's comment, I felt that what he said is actually more convincing then his.

My GP grade wasn't good also. But this doesn't mean that it is useless or irrelevant. On the other hand, I think it is very relevant to our lifes. We get to know why certain things have happened in this world. We get to think what are the factors (cultural, social, political, economic etc) that affect what we are having now, we have had or we are going to have. All these are good to know and think about. I feel that when we are going out to work, there are certain things we need to consider about. And through GP, we get to understand why certain decisions are made. For example, those investors need to know the cultural, social, political and ecomonic bankground, then they can know how much risk is there to invest in certain countries. If we are not taught GP, are we able to know that there are these factors needed to be thought about? By then, maybe the general knowledge is no longer irrelevant but very much relevant to our lifes.

I feel that somehow the author prefers sentimental approach rather than logical one. Yes, maybe a sentimental approach is able to attract people better. But I think a logical approach can provoke people to think. When knowledge is not used in a proper way, then it cannot be useful. When you have doubted and thought about the piece of knowledge you have learnt, then you have understood and applied it, then you have gained the knowledge. GP not only helps us to know more about what happens on this world, but more importantly it asks us to think about what we have known.

Why GP is so hard to score? Because we need a substantial, convincing and original essay. Why is it so hard to write a substantial one? Because we think that what happens on this world isn't so relevant to our lifes that we couldn't be bothered. Therefore we don't have enough examples to make the essay substantial. Why we cannot write a convincing one? Because we never bothered to think about the issues but to anyhow form arguments without much thinking, childishly thinking poeple will buy their story. Why we cannot wirte an original one? Because we only look at the superficial level of the issues, then we arrogantly feel it is enough for us to show that we know the issues, forgetting the deeper knowledge that have yet to be discovered.

He argues that why don't we do something, since we have been thinking so much about the issues? I want to ask, what else are the arguments that we are able to think at this schooling and dependant age but those adults who have more experience than us have not thought of? I have questioned myself before, how to write an essay with full of originality. The various newspapers and magazines have provided us certain arguments about the issues. If we use those arguments, with good examples, we can pass GP. Maybe with good language, we might be able to get a B.

You see, we can never know the full picture of certain issues as we are not them. Like tsunami victims, we never know how painful they feel since we do not experience the tsunami. We can only get information from media, in this way our perceptions maybe coloured, as we can only accept what is told to us. Even we logically think about the information given to us and get what we think is true, it is only part of the true story. Then do you think base on this incomplete information, we can think of great solution and solve the problem completely? The answer is obvious, no.

He mentioned that if we care for the people around us (whom we know or see) more, it is better as they are near to us, they are relevant. Whereas the world issues are not our problems but the politicians, hence irrelevant. But I think it is being a bit irresponsible. I agree that we should care for poeple around us more as we can offer the most immediate help when they are in need. But it doesn't mean that we don't care about the rest. We can always offer help to people who are far from us. We can donate things to them. We can offer solutions to the capable people so that they can execute. But if we don't have the general knowledge, how can we donate to those needy people if we don't know the associated organisations? How can we offer a feasible solutions to the able people to do it if we don't have enough background knowledge? Moreover, we are living in this world, how can we say it is irrelevant to us?

I don't think that argueing about certain issues and discussing issues with friends is the same thing. When we talk about world issues with friends, we don't always argue (maybe some does..) but we discuss. We don't try to win over one another but to discuss which arguments offered by the media is convincing and true and to form new arguments. When we write essays, we write to people whom we do not know to read. We cannot offer a smile or an honest facial expression to make them believed and convinced by what we say. We can only convince them through words. Only when you argue without being too absolute and with balanced point of views then they can be convinced. I think no matter how much you hate people argue with you, you will more or less convinced by balanced arguments. (The truth is poeple don't like to argue with one another)

In a nutshell, there are a lot of things have yet to be learnt. Even if we learn all the way till the day we die, we can never learn all the knowledge on this world. So we should try to think about what we have learned and not feel contented looking at the superficial level of the knowledge.

The GP essay is pointless. Discuss.
An article written for the RA Magazine by Tay Hui Mun (1A01A, 2002).

I've never been good at GP; don't think I ever will get good at it. Just look at how I'm writing now — if you think this is even C-grade stuff, you're sadly mistaken. I'd say 8/50.

Perhaps these are the incoherent, unstructured, poorly-argued, silly views of a bitter person who can only be contented with an average of 20-odd marks. Usually the only people in class who do worse than I do for the essay are Jonathan, a fellow writer for R(a), and Su Ching, the chief editor. Gangwei, our graphics and layout editor, comes close. Perhaps I'm just whining about my poor grades.

But why keep it all to myself? I might as well attempt to drag this ramshackle of an assessment system down with me.

Is the importance of General Knowledge greatly overrated?

I try to read the newspapers, and I take a look at the Economist when I walk past the growing stack in my room. Laziness is obviously not something to be proud of, and probably why I do so badly in GP. But I comfort myself in the knowledge that at least I know when the class is laughing at me, and not with me. But the question I always ask myself is this: What's the point of knowing so much about the world when you know so little about yourself and the people around you?

I'm not saying we don't need general knowledge. What I'm saying is that our immediate surroundings should be of far greater importance. Instead of troubling yourself with how the UN can mediate between Country X and Country Y, why not think about how you can ease the tension between the two classmates in your class who never seem to see eye to eye? Since you can remember that such a percentage of pollution will lead to our living that many years less, why don't you pick up that small piece of litter under you seat and throw it away?

I might one day apply the knowledge I've learnt from the Economist. For example, when my friend tells me that he doesn't have enough money, I could barrage him with how the woes of inflation, the devaluation of the US dollar and the instability of the Indonesian government have led to a reduction in capital such that I cannot cover my opportunity costs. Or I could carry on a proper conversation with him, with both of us none the wiser.

To add to the frustration of attempting to understand the market situation in East Asia relative to the United States, I have this nagging suspicion that many an entrepreneur who knows that much less than my classmates is still that much more successful than most of us will ever be.

And most importantly, the things I read about what people are doing across the globe don't help me much, don't teach me much. They only depress me. One more murder, one more war, one more statistic to quote in my essay.

If all of us GP students could feel just that little bit more for the people around us, even if we knew that little bit less about the people not around us, we would be happier, and those around us — those that we can affect, those whose problems we can actually provide solutions to — would be happier as well.

"The Argument has little true application in the lives of normal people." How far do you agree with this statement?

Another question is this: Since we know so much and talk so much, why don't we do something? You only argue about something when you feel strongly enough about it, and when you want to do something about it. I see no point in rattling on about education in Singapore or the ethics of gene therapy in Saudi Arabia when we aren't going to do anything about it, when no action is going to be taken at all. What's the point of thinking so hard, sorting out facts into examples and counterexamples, deciding on a stand, if you can't even understand how ITE students are faring, or how an infertile mother may be desperate for a baby?

The ability to form an argument may be an important tool. But once again I question its relevance to everyday living. Does coexistence with your neighbor or the auntie who sells lemon tea require you to form an argument? Did Martin Luther King really prepare an introduction (with definitions and stand), a body (with examples to provide substantiation and counterarguments, no less) and a conclusion (to sum up the speech and restate the stand)? Even as a leader of tomorrow, will argument really be the way to motivate your followers?

As a person, why would you ever want to learn how to win a person to your side through an argument when all it might take is a smile and some courtesy? Who, apart from examiners and interviewers, would really be impressed by the huge sums of general knowledge a person has stored in his processing appendage when such a person doesn't know when he's said too much or when he's overstayed his invitation? In fact, I'd hate it if a person argued with me over something -- and even if he were on my side, I'd find it irritating for him to produce an argument for me. That's why nobody does it in everyday life. Doesn't it make sense, then, that we shouldn't do so much of it in the classroom?

"Objectivity and logic run counter to human nature." To what extent is this true?

During a speech, what is more likely to move the crowd — high-strung passion and fervour or a clear, logical sequence of points and substantiation?

When you talk to a person, are you more likely to move him through tears and laughter or a clear, logical sequence of points and substantiation?

What would the GP teachers find more interesting — a sentimental narrative or a clear, logical sequence of points and substantiation?

What do we need more of — a few words of comfort and advice or —

A clear logical sequence of points and substantiation?

Conclusion

GP is useful, and its effectiveness in testing our command of the English language is as good as that of any other test. But like all other things in our education, its being tested has led to an unhealthy fixation on things that don't seem to click with the humans in us.

(Might that be one of the reasons the GP tutors find it so hard to maintain our interest in the subject? Why I'd rather read a book than my GP Bulletin anytime?)

So, what is the point of writing a GP essay?

As of this moment, it's so that I can pass my promos.

I can just imagine my GP teacher shaking her head mournfully.

You haven't been able to form a clear, logical sequence of argument. Too few examples and too little substantiation. You can't expect anyone to take you seriously.

well. actually got nothing to do, so do some postings, since i so rarely post...
this week will be quite an eventful week, valentine is on the wednesday, a rather bad day, since we are having a chem test right the next day, (for the j2s,LOL!!) there will be plenty of roses around, lol, and you can feel the testosterone and the estrogen in the air, lol!! as for me, being single(sobsob...) will got nothing to do on that day, i think i will be going for the movie thing!!( thanks wei kit!!!), and on friday, we will have our chinese new year celebration, wonder how it is gonna be like this year, i have no recollection of last years one, anyway, looking forward to this week, and hope you guys do too, especially the couple ones, erhemm..erhemm..

but do remember to revise for the exams, j2s especially, since this is an important year for us, must set our priority straight, which i still fail to do so, too easily distracted by the many things around, haizzzzz......

Settling In

For J2's it'll be the harsh realities/busyness/stressfulness of the A level year, and J1's, well. Settling into AC lah. Hello!

How's everyone?

We don't mean to make you jealous, but the grand-seniors had the most wonderful trip in Sarawak!So while you were busy catching up with tutorials, or trying to overtake the Most Hardworking Person on Earth, we were breathing fresh Sarawak air, feasting on Kolo Mee and seafood, irritating orang utans, shopping, relaxing, watching the Weixiao Pasta series...

At the shelter next to a pond. Later we were scared out of our wits because we suspected the pond housed crocodiles.

Food! Glorious food! (Specially for Wei Kit) Sam had lemongrass chicken, Bei Shi had fish & chips, Geri and I had lamb. Meal set me RM40 back but it was worth every cent.=D

Of course no trip to Kuching is complete without a pose next to the famous white cat.
The statue was next to a busy roundabout, and it was pretty embarrassing to have people passing by in cars, especially when we were trying to do a few 'memorable' poses, so Geri opted out of the pic in case someone she knows happened to spot her.

Kuching is a great place! Imagine having to drive only for a little more than an hour to see orang utans. The only weird thing about that lovely city is the sun rising and setting at earlier hours.

MOE Orientation Activities For The JC1 Scholars

It all started at 19th Dec..... Our second day here in Singapore... We're to go to MOE to have our briefing. Transportation is provided, which is a bus that leaves our hostel at 0815.

I woke up early that morning and prepared everything by 0700. But, you know what, i still got to MOE late. But thanks to my stupidity that I'm actually late for the bus. (I took a nap) As the result, I spent my first singaporean dollars for unnecessary cause. Super suei... The trip costed me 7 S$.... T-T. By the way, I reached MOE just in time. I signed in, got my goody bag and went to the fourth floor for the briefing. The briefing was quiet boring...we're required to fill in some forms and we're told what to do and what not to do in singapore... Usual stuff lar.... BUT, MOE has very nice people there... Especially Miss Aw, Miss Tan,and Miss Lim.... They are so friendly, and i am suppose to believe that they are teachers.... Anyway back to the story...

After lunch we had a field trip...Yay!!!! It was called "makan paradise" but it almost didn't have any link to food, not until the end when we got to taste Indian food in lil India. We went to the URA and had a boring time listening craps about how good and fun singapore is... Erk......... We had facilitators from JJC. Three jie jies(big sisters in mandarin)... Forgot their name ady...hehe sorry... XD... Then we went to the Chinatown and visited the supposedly oldest Taoist temple in Singapore. In the temple there is a golden scroll given by the China Emperor During the Ming Dynasty. After this we went directly to little india and were given the chance to taste the indian paratha(whatever..... Aiks.. deja vu). Well that's our first day in orientation.

The second day is the most enjoyable trip i ever had in singapore (well,..... this only the second trip i had in singapore, what do you expect?) The name of this activity is Culture Trail. We started off from Oldham Hall. We had a lecture about a lil bit of history bout singapore by Mr JS. It was quite fun, but it sounds so similar to the history in Malaysia.(Well DUH!! we're so near and were colonised by the same nations) The fun part is we get to have a tour around the civic district. Its the administrative area of the singapore if i am not mistaken. We went to the Arts House, the previous parliament building and the first ever singaporean court. We had the chance to see the parliament and sit where the singaporean ministers previously sits. (Sorry, the pictures i took there is damn blurred, so i cant put it up). The supreme court that we went after that was awesome. I never realized that the building is designed to see all the way through the building!! (Supposed to symbolize transparency in the singaporean law and order.) The view from "the disc" was awesome!!! Then we went to tour the singapore river mouth. We got to sit on the boat from boat quay!!! Heheheh jealous leh~~~~ We end the trip in esplanade a.k.a. the durians that don't stink....

We got the Personal Effectiveness Workshop(which according to Wei Kit is the kiasu workshop) =P. We had station games like peekaboo, double whacko and {the jump jump thingy} [dunno the game's name. fill in the {} for the game that we're supposed to jump over ppl's legs]. Then we had our MCBI personality test. [not sure about the name] =.= I did the test and i am actually an INTP, which suppose to mean i am a suicidal, alcoholic, drug-addicting NERD!!!NO WAY!!!! The test is wrong....I don't believe it!!!!!!!!!! >.<

Hehehhehehe.... And yesterday we had a Year End Concert-cum-Party. Wei Kit managed to sneak it and had fun with us. The performance was from the bridging scholars... They did a great job preparing for the show. We had a great time there. Malaysian bridging scholars actually got vote to be the second best show... Yeah!! Malaysia Boleh!! (But actually you know what, they cheated... hehe....Majority of the spectators who vote is from Malaysia) Bluek!!

Thats all for the MOE orientation till now. We will rest for 4 days for christmas.... Orientation will continue at 27th December. Till then. Bye!!!(It's bit too long, but its hard to summarized all the 4 days without typing so long)

As I look back on this year.. I guess I can speak for many, if not all of us.. that it has been a really wonderful experience..
No doubt, we've been through the ups and downs.. (and maybe a few sharp turns as well as 360* loops) But heck, we survived it!!
As the year draws to a close.. I guess we can reflect upon it.. and go 'Hey, that was a good year.'

I would think that what really makes an truly enriching experience.. is the people. No matter where we go, we can be really gratefully thankful if we are with a great bunch of people. And I'll be proud and happy to say 'I'm a happy camper!' (heh. 2nd time i said it in the span of 2 days.)
But yeah!! School.. Hostel.. Crappy ppls.. Seniors.. Everything comes together.. Like a perfectly cooked hamburger! haha.. With the sesame seeds.. the soft buns.. the tender meat.. the juicy lettuce.. and the sauce that adds to the flavour.. We cant eat a burger without a meat right? Nor can we have one less piece of bun. Same for us loh. See. Nice analogy right? haha.. (yup, wei kit's hungry. Think : Carl's Jr.)

You guys have been a really wonderful bunch. I've never actually had seniors in malaysia.. But yeah, the being-a-junior experience has truly been an exciting one.
From the tang yuans.. to the trolley-down-a-slope during BBQ experience..

Hey, its been a great year! Wei Kit has learnt many many thingies. Like how ppl think its really weird for someone to start speaking in the 3rd person *cough cough* And yeah, the constant 'shut up's when the screeching/screaming starts =P
I guess I've really learnt a lot during this one year, be it from you guys or the incidents/experiences shared with you guys. (and girls lah. heh. in case there are any feminists here..no, no! no hidden implications!=)
I would safely say, I have matured as a person (erm.. really leh..) both emotionally, mentally and spiritually. But I'm still scared of cockroaches lah. Dont blame me..

And to everyone..
Though the year coming to the end.. Its only the beginning.. of a new phase in life.. Some of us will be in J2.. (well most of us..) and the others.. moving on with life. (Uni! yays!)
But above all, there is Someone up there who brought us all together, and will definitely be with each and every one of us as we continue embarking on our life journeys.

There are a few major events that have happened:

Baccalaureate service, where our beloved ( times infinity) juniors gave us roses and made us looked as if we have got admirers. :)

Farewell dinner, where our juniors finally completed the Malaysian Direct AC Senior Wannabe Course 2006 and are qualified as seniors. Some even can't help to take the pictures with their certificates.

Celebration Night, where we celebrate our survival of the whole year. Everyone is still properly dressed at that moment, but one hour later... *cough cough*

Uploading Files to My Network Places

Hey there peoples.. i'm not sure if everyone is able to access everyone's accounts on the network, but so far all the guys can reach the other guys' comps..

so anyway, we'll try it ok.. just to share stuffs on the network..

1. Copy/Move the file you want to share to a shareable folder. (The one which i use is 'Shared documents' under My Computer)
2. Right click the folder you would want to share and click 'Properties'.
3. Click on the 'Sharing' tab and under 'Network sharing and security', make sure the 'Share this folder on the network' box is ticked.
4. When you go back to the folder, it should show some kind of hand holding it. This means that the folder is now shared. Hurrah!

For convenience's sake, our boys' computers are under a workgroup.. to set it to the workgroup:
1. On your Desktop, right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
2. Click on the 'Computer Name' tab.
3. There will be a section where it says 'To rename this computer or join a workgroup, click change'. Well, click change! =)
4. Change the name of your computer to your liking but set the workgroup name to 'VISTA'.
5. Click Ok till everything looks right..
6. Tell Wei Kit if it works! =)

Mooncake Festival

hey guys.. its good to have the promos over (well for some of us!) and its even greater for all of us to be able to celebrate the mooncake festival together!! yay fun fun fun!! anyone who has the photos upload it to the network places can.. esp if got the video of allen and janene volunteering to dance!! haha.. see see the spirit of MB!! =)

anyway but yeah.. erm.. all the candles/sparklers/lanterns did come at a price.. the big fat candles cost $2, the lantern candles cost $2, the lanterns themselves cost $5, the sparklers were $2.35, and the round flat candle thingies (which we didnt use much) were $3.40.. so the total cost of the stuff were $14.75.. so erm like yeah.. it would be nice if those of us who played contributed $1.. but its not gonna be like compulsary or anything yeah.. but feel free to contribute any amount can..? yay.. =)

on a lighter note, we have to plan for POST-promos (and pre-A's) activities soon!! especially those that would involve our beloved seniors!! we HAVE to take them out of their mugging grounds and enjoy their last few weeks with their favourite juniors right.. haha.. so so so.. suggestions suggestions!! =)

Hooray! The seniors have ended our preliminary exam today. A big "thank you" to all juniors who prayed, supported and cheered us on in all sorts of ways (esp those who've been acting like clowns =) Your antics and lame jokes have helped us to sort of "release" exam stress (albeit the stress added for having naughty juniors)

Hopefully all of us will have fun tomorrow during the BBQ. And also, you all should also take a rest from preparing for promos (assuming that you all have started your revision =p) But do not need to worry too much, I have much faith that all of you will once again shine in the promos. Intelligence + hard work, you can ace your promos easily.
