IRAS trip

Five students proudly represented their classes (and their country!) for a National Education Learning Journey to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS). These students were Janene, Sangiita, Voon Ken, Victor and Wei Kit.

With their class spirits and school glory at stake, the enthusiastic participants happily stoned at the highly interesting powerpoint presentation cum quiz that the IRAS staff had planned for us. We have gained much valuable insight to the processes and importance of the Singapore taxation system, and not to mention some stationery won by participants of other classes who managed to answer the quiz questions correctly.

Next was a simple but scrumptious refreshments courtesy of IRAS. As expected, certain members of the entourage gratefully indulged in the assortment of cakes and sandwiches prepared. I am also proud to announce that one of our hostel representatives had succeeded in wiping the plates of food clean.

A quick tour of the IRAS building ensued, where our students stared in awe at the document lift used to transport letters and documents to other floors. We were also equally amazed by the self-extracting letter machine, which by the name suggests, strips open (!) the envelopes and extract their contents, saving many precious minutes of the officers who would then sort the documents manually. Of course, our scholars never failed to amuse themselves with ridiculous actions and thoughts, which included taking pictures of our reflections in the lift doors, and asking if we could join what sounded like a food fest for employees of IRAS on the 8th of August.

The tour of IRAS ended with more phototaking sessions initiated by our very own schoolmate. After much posing and camwhoring, the 5 of us departed from IRAS with a sense of fulfillment in gaining new knowledge and good food.

Your very own reporter wannabe,
Toh Wei Kit
